How this conversion works

Cubic feet are the common denominator underneath every name on this site. A cord resolves to 128 ft³ — a 4 ft × 8 ft face at 48 in deep. Its 4 ft × 8 ft × 4 ft shape is a convention, not a requirement: any stack totalling 128 ft³ is a cord, which is why a 4 ft × 16 ft × 2 ft stack counts just the same.
